BOSTON, June 15, 2021 – Surgical Planning Associates, Inc., (SPA), today announced Carl T. Talmo, MD, has performed the first-ever augmented reality-guided anterior total hip replacement. Dr. Talmo performed the surgery at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH) in Boston where he serves as Director of Arthroplasty Research. He was assisted by Chris Sambaziotis, MD, MPH, the Co-Director of Outpatient Arthroplasty at NEBH. The surgeons used SPA’s HipInsight™ System, the first and only FDA-cleared augmented reality guidance platform for total hip replacement.

The HipInsight System displays real-time 3D models of the patient’s anatomy, implants and instruments inside the body via Microsoft HoloLens 2™ augmented reality glasses, effectively giving surgeons “x-ray vision.” This simplifies surgery because they can keep their eyes focused on the patient, rather than constantly looking up at computer screens, while also supporting more precise component placement. An open-platform technology, HipInsight can be used with any implant system and surgical approach.

“The preoperative plan provided by the HipInsight System is an amazing 3-dimensional rendering that I found very helpful in planning and identifying the complexities in this case, which involved a patient with a significant degenerative scoliosis,” Dr. Talmo said. “Intra-operatively, the augmented reality system allowed for an accurate execution of our plan, as I was able to perfectly visualize our plan projected into the patient’s anatomy.”

“NEBH has a long and proud tradition of innovation and invention around the science of total joint replacement,” said David A Passafaro, President of NEBH. “Using the HipInsight System, Doctors Talmo and Sambaziotis are helping to break new ground with the anterior approach for total hip replacement using this technology.”

SPA Wins Shark Tank Award

Following successful completion of the first anterior cases, the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) presented Surgical Planning Associates with the Shark Tank Award at the first annual Emerging Technologies in Arthroplasty™ event. Meeting attendees selected the HipInsight System as the most promising technology introduced at the event.
